02am is an 4 track ep by the young producer hekkla from eindhoven in the netherlands. the first track is sunset strip , a slowly build house track that moves like the last waves of heat at the end of a hot summers day, walking home feeling satisfied, all ready for the night. saturday morning sentimentality is a hard to pinpoint track that sounds like the bastard son of a trio between the melancholic side of cyndi lauper, alphaville and the echoes of a cheesy saturday morning cartoon theme song from the late 80 s. on the other side memories of tau ceti feels like tumbling into space with only the memories left of a good time on an alien world, accelerating faster and faster but still enjoying it, even though you know that the vacuum of space will eventually kill you. finishing with the hardest track no math , because, boys and girls, it s no math... hand stamped artwork by frank koedood.

hot off a couple of 12” from topher horn, rocksteady disco follows up with its first compilation featuring a heap of heavily sampled originals from more well-known editors. pontchartrain leads the release off with a summer-inspired aural prozac number, just in time for this june release. next up is notorious detroit editor lafleur, busting out this original milky-smooth detroit boogie house production. a slight little rearrangement from rocksteady disco label boss peter croce makes this one a bit smoother for the djs. lyon, france’s g2s kicks off the flip with a big-bottomed stomper reminiscent of some mcde ‘raw cuts’. pontchartrain book-ends this release with a track that puts the ‘rocksteady’ in rocksteady disco, with heavy analog-meets-electro drum programming and complete with pontchartrain on vocoder duties. hand numbered edition of 500 copies with dl code.

welcome to number 38 in the moton series where the chaps join up with legendary record collector, bbe compiler, love vinyl man and reckless pirate the mighty zaf for a stupendous 3 tracker where he brings his editing skills to the forefront. kicking off with the hardcore disco string driven monster doing our own thing zaf let s the rhythm just bubble. he then steps down into the sultry gangster groove of i can t let him down which is a real hand raiser and then he gets our mixers delight on with get down beats. another master release from moton.

this is an album of deeply emotional music. it s not all heartfelt niceties and eye-welling moods though. rhythmic theory did after all come to light (or should that be dark) in the gloomy alleyways of uk soundsystem music begat from dubstep and all that other stuff. -creeper- is on hand to affirm that this is a record still steeped in true, stern moodiness, where a stalking sub line, some metallic percussion and an icy drone can still strike fear more than a thousand angry wobble basslines. it s worth noting how much attention has been given to shorter vignettes. as well as the aforementioned, cryptically titled -interlude-, -work of fiction- and -end (of forever)- both give insights into the places rhythmic theory cares to roam beyond the structure of a long form track. these are places where melancholic or downright ambiguous dispositions interplay with each other, from the synthetic to the earthly, the malevolent to the tender. in the end, even at its most monochromatic, nothing is black and white on rhythmic theory s debut album, and that s just fine with us.

in 2006, tim arndt released the first near the parenthesis album “go out and see”. arndt had intended to follow up that release with a more beatless ambient album, where percussion was left to the side and composition took center stage. a shelved idea that we now get the benefit of a full ten years later. this new album helical is the realization of arndt s stripped down ambient concept. helical features arndt’s characteristic experimental modem classical instrumentation and compositional style, but slows things down and stretches them out. the focus on the organic is clear, but moments of ethereal breath weave in and out and prevent the album from becoming too self aware. helical, as a loose reference to the geometric structure of our very dna and it contains themes that are driven by a recent discovery of arndt’s past and ancestry. the release seamlessly stitches all of these concepts together and marks an unique release and new direction for arndt’s near the parenthesis.

the deewees say: we met bolis in 2006 via myspace, and then later in real life when we toured asia. to escape the unbearable boredom of his native macao, bolis had decided to try his hand at making electronic music - inspired by a jean-michel jarre concert - and we have stayed in touch all these years. this record is the result of bolis visit to deewee in gent where he was enchanted by the world of analogue synths. we should also mention that bolis had a previous life as south east asias number 2 rubiks cube champion in 2003. think logic system and telex. sleeve design by ill studio.

longstreth lud bombino in sein applehead studio in new york ein, um gemeinsam an “azel” zu arbeiten. und dabei erwies sich longstretherwies als fantastischer produzent. er hat großen respekt vor der musikalischen tradition der tuareg und führte die sessions mit sanfter und geschickter hand. fans von bombino und tuareg-musik werden ein paar bemerkenswerte innovationen auf diesem album entdecken. die erste neuerung ist die einführung eines völlig neuen stils, für den bombino hier pionierarbeit leistet. die sonnige mischung aus blues/rock und einem reggae-onedropandbounce-beat nennt er liebevoll “tuareggae”. eine weitere neuerung ist die erstmalige verwendung von westlichen vokal-harmonien in tuareg-musik-aufnahmen (durch longstreths einfluss), was den songs eine völlig neue tiefe und farbe verleiht. “azel” ist der name einer kleinen wüstenstadt, nur ein paar kilometer von agadez entfernt
